A skull found by a dog in the desert has been identified as that of a missing San Bernardino County woman.
Authorities on Thursday say dental records indicate the skull is that of 30-year-old Anna Jeanette James of Landers. Her parents reported her missing in October of 2008.
Sheriff’s Sgt. Doug Hubbard says he is unsure of the circumstances surrounding the woman’s disappearance and investigators don’t know how she died.
A dog found the skull in the desert last month and brought it back to his home in Landers. The dog’s owners called authorities after their pet added it to a pile of animal bones in the backyard.
Volunteers searched 10 acres of nearby desert but didn’t find any other remains.
