cross tattoo on back of hand?

My friends ex had a tattoo of a simple cross on the back of his hand. When they were together he expressed being embarrassed about it. After realizing he was abusing their little prescription drugs without a prescription boy she left him. He has observed visiting times and the last time he drew the same cross on the back of his kids hand and told him that he needed to get one like his.

Does anyone know if there is a significance to the tattoo?
